Eagle

An improvised display of friendship

Bit

Scrubs

Do you have a special greeting that you always do with a best friend? It’s crazy how a ritualized handshake or turn of phrase can amplify these relationships.

I can’t think of any better example than the “Eagle” greeting between J.D. and Turk from Scrubs.

If you’ve never watched Scrubs—please watch Scrubs—the “Eagle” greeting consists of J.D. jumping into Turk’s arms and being held in the air like a little kid and spun around while yelling “Eagle.”

The first ever “Eagle” greeting—that took place in season 1—was improvised by Zach Braff (who plays J.D.). This improvised greeting became a running thread, appearing throughout the remainder of the series.

If you want to check out an “Eagle” compilation from seasons 1-8 below (the second in the compilation is my favorite), watch the video below.

You might just find yourself trying out an “Eagle” greeting the next time you see your best friend, which hopefully is this weekend!

Sudo

“Superuser do.” That’s what “Sudo” stands for if you like me were ever wondering.

It’s a program that allows users to run commands with the security privileges of another user—notably the root user (i.e. unrestricted access to the entire computer system, “the superuser”).

With Sudo, a user—while logged into their own account and if given privileges—can do adminstrative tasks such as installing software or editing system configuration files, which typically requires root access.

Importantly, Sudo commands are logged and can be traced back to the user.

If you are wondering about that creepy sandwich drawing above (I think it’s a BLT?), it’s because that is what the logo of the Sudo program looks like. The logo was inspired by the xkcd comic “Sandwich.”

Not technically related, but I can’t help but thinking of Phil Collins’ song, “Sussudio,” when talking about Sudo.

Ironically “Sussudio” was also improvised by Collins and doesn’t have any particular meaning.

Collins intended to replace the lyric with another word but couldn’t find a real one that seemed to work as well.

So, I guess he doubled down on it and named the whole song after “Sussudio?” Start your weekend with this banger from 1985.

Thank you for reading and have a fulfilling weekend!
